L’Orchestre Pasdeloup et Franck Tortiller, avec différentes formations jazz, s’associent sur scène depuis plusieurs années désormais. Collaboration et complicité de longue date pour un travail sur le patrimoine musical, particulièrement la musique américaine et le théâtre musical.

En 2007, airs de music-hall et extraits d’opérette à grand spectacle réunissent au Théâtre du Châtelet l’Orchestre Pasdeloup et l’Orchestre National de Jazz sous la direction de Franck Tortiller. Ce concert sur les succès de l’entre-deux-guerres est le fruit d’un important travail musicologique de recherches, réécritures et arrangements.

Au Châtelet à nouveau en 2010, à l’occasion de ses 150 ans, l’Orchestre Pasdeloup invite Jacques Gamblin et l’Orchestre Franck Tortiller. Autour de la valse, en écho au texte de Jacques Gamblin – Le Toucher de la hanche – Franck Tortiller écrit des compositions originales. pour un programme entre littérature, jazz et symphonique qui faisait la part belle aux souvenirs de bal musette, aux standards de jazz. En 2016, l’Orchestre Pasdeloup renoue avec le Trio Tortiller pour interpréter œuvres de Gershwin et grands standards du jazz.

À chaque fois, la volonté commune de faire se rencontrer les musiques les a conduit à proposer une version innovante qui associe orchestre symphonique et trio jazz constitué de batterie, contrebasse et, tantôt vibraphone, tantôt marimba.

Le trio Franck Tortiller (vibraphone, marimba), Patrice Héral (batterie), Yves Torchinsky (contrebasse) propose une version innovante notamment du Concerto qui associe orchestre symphonique et trio jazz.

L’instrumentation de ce trio reste assez rare dans l’univers du jazz et permet dans cet arrangement une grande liberté de jeu, d’invention et d’improvisation, sans jamais trahir l’esprit des œuvres proposées. La rencontre avec l’Orchestre Pasdeloup témoigne d’un travail mélodique et harmonique, frais et énergique, à l’image de la musique de Gershwin devenue aujourd’hui fondatrice de la mythologie américaine.

There has been long-lasting complicity and cooperation between Franck Tortiller and the Pasdeloup Orchestra around musical heritage. They have particularly focused on American music and music theatre.

In 2007, under the baton of Franck Tortiller, the French National Jazz Orchestra (ONJ) met the Pasdeloup Orchestra on the Chatelet’s stage for music-hall tracks and excerpts from modern operettas. The concert of Inter-war period hits demanded great musicological research, rewriting and musical arrangements.

To celebrate their 150th anniversary, the Pasdeloup Orchestra invited actor Jacques Gamblin and the Franck Tortiller Orchestra for a performance about waltz. As an echo to Jacques Gamblin’s text « Le Toucher de la Hanche » (the Touch of the Hip)
Franck Tortiller wrote original compositions especially for the gig. At the crossroads of literature, jazz and symphony, the program dedicated a large part to Bal-Musette souvenirs and jazz standards.

In 2016, The Pasdeloup Orchestra reconnected with the Franck Tortiller Trio to perform both Gershwin’s work and great jazz standards. Each time, their shared intention to make different music styles meet has led them to innovative outcomes where
symphonic orchestra blends in with a jazz trio.

The Trio comprising Franck Tortiller (vibraphone and marimba) , Patrice Héral (drums) and Yves Torchinsky (double bass) offers a particularly pioneering version of the Concerto. The instrumental format is quite unusual among the jazz world and allows great freedom with arrangements, improvisation and invention – without altering the original works.

Collaborating with the Pasdeloup orchestra gave rise to melodic and harmonic work. The outcome is fresh and full of energy, as an extension to Gershwin’s music, which has become the cornerstone of American music.

Le morceau de bravoure est peut être cette version de 14 mn du Concerto en Fa, captivante, qui swingue, file en crescendo ravelien : une véritable intensité de l’orchestre avec des courts inserts, des décalages du trio, où le vibraphone installe à merveille le climat. On en vient à se demander, non sans audace, pourquoi Gershwin lui-même n’y a pas songé tant le dialogue de Franck Tortiller avec l’orchestre est vif, pertinent.
